Pa' lante Mentorship Program:
One of the goals for this year is to unite the North East region through community service. Therefore, we are implementing several projects for all of the NBLHO chapters in the North East. One of the community service projects is a mentoring program. This is an opportunity to come together to reach out to the underprivileged youth in each of our communities, and expose them to professions in medicine. Many of the Northeast chapters already participate in mentoring, and now is the time to put forth more effort to the ongoing projects, as well as start new traditions. A mentoring event protocol that may help in planning an event can be found by clicking here. Feel free to come up with your own ideas as well. The goal is to host this mentoring event prior to the regional conference that will be held on February 21, 2009 (more information on the conference to come). Make sure to document your event with photos, as we would like all participating chapters to present their event at the conference. We would also like to make this an ongoing commitment for each chapter.

NBLHO's Continuing Commitment to our Community:
As a region we want to commit ourselves to a service event that affects the Latino community. This year the community service project we are implementing will focus on Type II diabetes. We would like to have the entire North East region join together during Hispanic Heritage month to create awareness about Type II diabetes. As we all know, Type II Diabetes disproportionately affects the Hispanic community, and this is one of the biggest healthcare challenges our community is facing. One idea is to participate in the Step Out and Fight Diabetes walk. Each chapter should check the website for host sites near them and to request a registration packet. This is a great opportunity for us to unite for one cause. We strongly encourage each chapter to raise money and participate in the walk. The chapter that raises the most money for the walk will receive an award at the 2008 regional conference. For chapters not able to participate, there are many other options to increase awareness about Type II diabetes such as through patient education, setting up a screening event, and fundraising for the American Diabetes Association.
This event was a success. Please visit our site in the near future for more intiatives.

Cesar Estrada Chavez Day and National Latino Health Day
Cesar Chavez Day, March 31st, is celebrated in many states and other communities across the country to honor the legacy of “one of the heroic figures of our time.” Chavez led the historic non-violent movement for farm worker rights and inspired millions to commit to social, economic and civil rights activism.
NNLAMS has passed a resolution to become a part of honoring and supporting his legacy to educate, inspire and empower the community. March 31st (or the Friday before that weekend) will be a day when all NNLAMS chapters nationwide act in solidarity by remembering the life of Cesar Chavez. It will also be National Latino Health Day, an occasion to take the time to focus on health issues affecting Latinos in the US and/or abroad. The resolution and more information can be downloaded by clicked here or below.
